Frequently Asked Questions
-
It varies depending on your vehicle's towing capacity and the weight of your motorcycle.
Find out if you can haul your bike with your vehicle and which MotoTote carrier works best for you with the Fit Calculator here.
To calculate the maximum weight your vehicle can haul on a hitch, divide your vehicle's towing capacity by 10, then subtract the weight of the MotoTote.
(For example: 5,000 / 10 = 500. 500 - 62 = 438. In this case, a vehicle with 5,000 lbs towing capacity can haul a motorcycle up to 438 lbs.)
-
MotoTote carriers come with everything except tie-downs. Tie-downs are required to secure your motorcycle to MotoTote. We recommend 3 tie-downs per bike.
For recommendations for your motorcycle take a look at our Tie Down Packs. For additional safety & visibility, we also recommend a MotoTote Light Kit which extends tail light functions to your MotoTote.

It's understandable to be hesitant about new and unfamiliar things.
If you Google the chat rooms and forums and you'll see that, generally, the skepticism is from people who have not tried a MotoTote and the enthusiasts are MotoTote users.

Not if you stay within the weight limitations of the vehicle and hitch.Click here for more details on weights and limitations.
-
Your vehicle's suspension is designed to handle up to a specific weight. Your vehicle towing capacity is one expression of this weight. This is why we recommend using 10% of total towing capacity as the limit of weight-on-hitch.
-
In most cases, tail lights are not blocked, but if you would like additional visibility we recommend the MotoTote LED Light Kit, which extends tail light functions to the MotoTote.
Regarding license plates, they are rarely blocked. From a customer service perspective, it’s has been a non-existent complaint.
-
Yes. In most cases, a spare tire is not a problem. The MotoTote is adjustable up to 20 inches from the hitch pin to the center of the motorcycle or scooter. Vertically, the tire prints will be about at the height of the top of the hitch receiver tube. The widest part of the bike is usually the handle bars which will be off to the side of the spare tire if it's in the middle. Assembly is reversible so the handle bars can be on either side.
If additional distance is required we recommend adding our extended receiver tube, adjustable for up to 31 inches from the hitch pin to the center of the bike.
-
The ground clearance will be approximately the same as the height of the hitch receiver.
